Chemmis, Mythological site in Nile Delta, Egypt
Chemmis was an island in a shallow lake near the temple of Buto, according to ancient Greek sources. The ruins of the sanctuary are scattered across a low-lying area of the Nile Delta landscape.
This site became important in ancient times as the reported place where the goddess Isis hid her son Horus from the god Seth. That mythological role made it a significant religious center for Egyptians.
