Bawiti, Desert administrative center in Bahariya Oasis, Egypt.

Bawiti is an administrative town in the Bahariya Oasis, situated at about 130 meters elevation with palm groves and mineral springs scattered throughout the surrounding desert terrain. The settlement functions as a supply hub for the region and sits within Egypt's Western Desert landscape.

The area contains several decorated underground tombs from the 26th Dynasty, including burial chambers of merchants and officials from ancient times. These excavated chambers reveal that the oasis was a significant trade hub during the pharaonic period.

The town serves as a hub for oasis farming, where residents have adapted to desert life by developing irrigation systems and maintaining date palm plantations that shape daily routines.

The town is accessible by a long desert road of about 370 kilometers from Cairo and requires preparation for high temperatures, especially during summer months. Visitors should bring plenty of water and sun protection, and check local services before arriving.

The nearby Valley of Golden Mummies holds a large necropolis with hundreds of Greco-Roman mummified remains that were discovered in 1999. This site shows how the region attracted people from different cultures over many centuries.
