Athani, human settlement
Athani is a town in Belagavi district, Karnataka, situated on elevated terrain surrounded by fertile agricultural land. The streets move at a calm pace with traditional houses, small shops, and local markets selling vegetables, fruits, and handmade goods.
The town was established in 1853 and holds the distinction of being Karnataka's oldest municipal town. Its past includes battles between Mughal and Maratha armies, events that remain part of local memory and conversation.
The name Athani connects to local traditions rooted in North Karnataka culture. Handmade leather footwear and traditional crafts remain visible throughout the town, passed down through families and still practiced in small workshops.
The town connects well to nearby cities through maintained roads and regular bus services to places like Belagavi and Vijayapura. Getting around is straightforward, whether on foot through the town or by using local transportation options.
The Krishna River flows roughly 18 kilometers south of the town, providing water for surrounding fields and offering scenes of people bathing or washing clothes along its banks. Sri MurughSendra Swamiji, a revered saint, once lived in Gachhinamath here and was known for detecting underground water, a gift still remembered in local religious traditions.
