Fort Suse, Military fortress in Kurdistan Region, Iraq

Fort Suse is a military fortress in the Kurdistan Region that sits against Piramagroon Mountain and is surrounded by massive reinforced concrete walls with iron bracing. The compound features four circular corner structures connected by these fortified barriers.

The facility was constructed in 1977 by Russian engineers as a military training center for operational preparation. In 2005 it was converted into a detention facility, transforming its original purpose entirely.

The facility marked a shift in Iraqi prison management when it welcomed international inspection from the International Committee of the Red Cross in October 2007.

The site is located in a mountainous region and stands out visibly due to its large fortified structure. Access should be arranged according to local conditions and the challenging terrain of the area.

During the December 2005 Iraqi National Ballot, ninety percent of eligible detainees at Fort Suse participated in the democratic voting process.
