菅原神社

菅原神社, Shinto shrine in Japan

Sugawara Shrine is a small Shinto sanctuary in Kitakyushu featuring traditional wooden buildings and well-maintained grounds. It includes several auxiliary shrines dedicated to different deities, a central prayer hall, and an area where visitors hang written wishes on wooden plaques.

The sanctuary was founded over 1,000 years ago to honor Sugawara no Michizane, a renowned scholar and official from Kyoto. It later became an important site for the local community and remains a center for traditional prayers and ceremonies today.

The shrine honors Sugawara no Michizane, a historical figure revered as the god of learning and scholarship. Visitors, especially students, come here to seek success in their studies and exams, making it an active place during academic seasons.

The sanctuary is located in Kokurakita-ku near the city center and is easily accessible by car, train, or bus with parking available. Visitors should know that the site is open year-round and allows for relaxed exploration without time pressure.

The sanctuary is home to a revered statue of a sacred cow called Goshin Ushi that visitors touch for luck and wisdom. The shrine's priest is also a member of a local historical costume group and performs to share stories about the city's past.
