Kanden Tunnel Electric Bus, Electric bus route in the Japanese Alps between Toyama and Nagano Prefectures, Japan
The Kanden Tunnel Electric Bus is a shuttle route running through a 6.1-kilometer underground passage that connects Ogizawa Station to Kurobe Dam Station. The journey takes passengers mostly beneath the mountain, creating an unusual travel experience through the interior of the Alps.
The tunnel was originally built for the Kurobe Dam construction project and initially served work traffic. It opened to the public in 1964 and switched to zero-emission electric buses in 2019.
The electric bus system represents Japanese engineering excellence in mountain transportation, integrating environmental protection with tourism development in the Alps.
The ride takes about 16 minutes and tickets are sold at Tateyama and Ogizawa stations. It is advisable to arrive early, particularly during summer months when many visitors use the route.
The route runs 5.4 kilometers underground, with the remaining sections covered by snow shelters. In winter, this construction transforms the journey into a completely enclosed experience beneath roofs and mountain.
