Marina Bay Street Circuit, Street circuit in Marina Bay, Singapore
Marina Bay Street Circuit is a street circuit in Marina Bay, Singapore that winds through several city districts while including 19 sharp corners. The track runs under bridges, passes colonial architecture and follows the waterfront promenade with views of modern skyscrapers.
The circuit opened in 2008 and brought the first Formula One night race to Asia. Over the years the track layout changed several times to create faster sections and better overtaking opportunities.
The name Marina Bay reflects the central bay location where financial buildings and historic streets connect. During races the business district transforms into a sprawling celebration with music and street stalls along the track.
The circuit uses public roads that close during race weekends, with spectator areas distributed at several points along the route. Floodlights illuminate the entire track after sunset so drivers and spectators can see everything clearly.
Drivers cross the Anderson Bridge, a historic bridge from 1910, while traveling at speeds above 155 miles per hour (250 kilometers per hour). The track remains the only one in the Formula One calendar that runs entirely counterclockwise.
