Mandai Crematorium and Columbarium

Mandai Crematorium and Columbarium is a large facility comprising eight three-story blocks with a total of 133,000 memorial niches situated in Singapore's Central Catchment Area. The complex includes four service halls and twelve cremators that serve visitors daily.

The facility opened in 1982 to address growing demand for cremation services after Mount Vernon Crematorium reached its maximum capacity in the late 1970s. This expansion allowed the city to accommodate more families needing such services.

Families gather here during important festivals to perform traditional rituals at the memorial spaces, reflecting how the place serves as a spiritual center for different communities across Singapore.

The site is accessible daily and has multiple entrances, making it easier for families to navigate and locate specific memorial areas. On-site facilities are available to assist visitors with their various needs.

The facility uses a double-layer niche design that saves space by having each wall accommodate memorial spaces on both front and rear sections. This clever system lets the complex serve many families while making efficient use of the available land.
