Kharpoot

Located on a hilltop at 1,270 meters elevation, Kharpoot contains ancient fortifications overlooking fertile plains near the Murat River in eastern Turkey.

The settlement dates back to 2000 BCE and served as a military base during Byzantine occupation in 938, later changing control between Artuqids and Seljuks.

The site reveals layers of Byzantine, Armenian, Turkish, and Kurdish influences through its medieval fortresses, religious buildings, and traditional architectural elements.

Visitors can access multiple historical structures including Harput Castle, various mosques, a church, and the natural formation of Buzluk Cave within walking distance.

The archaeological remains contain evidence of continuous human habitation spanning four millennia, with structures demonstrating multiple construction techniques from different civilizations.
