Home of Li Zhi, Ming dynasty philosopher residence in Quanzhou, China

The Home of Li Zhi is a Ming dynasty residence featuring traditional Chinese architectural design with courtyards, wooden frameworks, and hand-carved details. The building contains distinct areas for living, working, and private retreat arranged around internal spaces.

The residence belonged to a 16th century thinker who rejected rigid Confucian orthodoxy and lived in Quanzhou during a time of intellectual tension. His ideas about individual freedom and independent thought made him a controversial figure of his era.

The residence embodies the spirit of an intellectual who questioned authority and championed individual thought in a conformist society. Visitors can sense this rebellious philosophy through the layout of spaces designed for independent study and reflection.

The building is open to visitors daily and offers both self-guided exploration and group tours to understand how the rooms were used. Comfortable shoes are recommended since you will walk through multiple courtyards and different levels throughout the residence.

The residence preserves original furniture and personal belongings from the time of its occupant, including his writing desk and manuscripts containing his ideas. These objects give visitors an uncommon glimpse into the everyday world of a historical thinker.
