江口崖墓, Archaeological tomb complex in Pengshan County, China
The Jiangkou Rock Tombs are an archaeological complex with multiple chambers carved directly into cliff faces, featuring detailed burial structures and architectural elements. The site contains hundreds of graves from different periods, densely carved into the rock side by side.
The site was built over many centuries as a burial ground for the ancient Shu Kingdom, with tombs added during different periods. Modern excavation work beginning in the 20th century uncovered the full scope of the cemetery and its contents.
The burial chambers here reveal how people in the Shu Kingdom organized their tombs based on social rank and spiritual beliefs. You can observe the different ways families arranged their dead, which tells you much about their society.
Access is through a visitor center that explains the excavation work and displays artifacts in protective cases. Guided tours are available to help you understand the different tomb types and what archaeologists discovered at the site.
The graves were carved entirely from natural rock without using separate stones or mortar. This construction method is remarkable because it shows how skilled ancient craftsmen were at working directly with the living stone.
