Sichuan Museum, Public museum in Chengdu, China.
Sichuan Museum is a large regional museum in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province in southwest China. It has several exhibition halls covering archaeology, painting, calligraphy, bronzeware, and the ethnic cultures of the region.
The museum was founded in the 1940s and moved to a new building in 2009 in the cultural district of Chengdu. The move gave it much more space and allowed the collections to be displayed in a more organized way.
The Sichuan Museum sits in the cultural district near Tianfu Square and draws both locals and visitors from across China. The collection of Tibetan Buddhist objects is especially known and shows religious works that are rarely found in a city museum.
The museum is next to the Sichuan Provincial Library and within walking distance of Tianfu Square. Visitors should plan for at least half a day, as the exhibition halls are spread across multiple floors and there is a lot to see.
The museum holds one of the largest collections of Tibetan Buddhist art found in a Chinese provincial museum. Many of these objects came from monasteries in the western parts of Sichuan province, areas that were historically part of Tibetan cultural territory.
