The Mao Zedong Statue is a white marble figure 12.26 m tall, standing on a three-tiered terrace and pedestal at the centre of a 1,283 m² reviewing platform in Tianfu Square. Mao wears a greatcoat, his right hand raised in a wave and his left fist held behind his back; the monument faces south toward Renmin South Road. The pedestal is carved with seven sunflowers on each side.

The sculpture was created in the 1960s during a period when China was building large public monuments across many cities. The location previously held historical structures that were cleared to make way for this new landmark.

The statue faces south down Renmin South Road, and its base is carved with seven sunflowers on each side, standing for the 70 million people of Sichuan at the time. On major occasions the Sichuan Provincial Party Committee has the statue cleaned of dust.

The monument sits in the center of the square and is easily reached by public transit that stops right at the location. The square itself is open and flat, making it simple to approach from any direction and view the sculpture from different angles.

The statue's height of 12.26 m encodes Mao Zedong's birthday, 26 December; the 7.1 m pedestal marks the founding date of the Chinese Communist Party, 1 July. The three-tiered platform rises 8.1 m, a reference to Army Day, 1 August, and each side of the pedestal carries seven carved sunflowers, standing for Sichuan's 70 million people at the time.
