The white marble sculpture rises 12.26 meters high in the center of Tianfu Square, depicting Mao Zedong with an extended arm looking over the city.
The monument replaced an ancient palace from the Shu Kingdom in 1968, during a period when numerous statues of Mao were constructed across China.
The statue represents a period of Chinese history when political figures were memorialized through large-scale public monuments in central urban locations.
Visitors can reach the statue by taking metro lines 1 or 2 to Tianfu Square station, where the monument stands as a central reference point.
The statue occupies the exact location where a moat was filled in 1967 to create an air raid shelter beneath the current square.
