Chengdu Museum stands on the west side of Tianfu Square, a nine-storey building of 65,000 m² designed by Sutherland Hussey Harris with AVIC CAPDI and Pansolution. Its facade is wrapped in 20,000 m² of brass mesh, giving the "gold-in-jade" effect of metal over glass. The raised ground floor on the east forms a public ramp-plaza linking the square with the Huangcheng Mosque.

On 15 September 1958 the city government set up the Chengdu Topographical Museum Preparatory Committee at Daci Temple, with deputy mayor and writer Li Jieren as its director. The museum opened there in 1984. In 2007 Sutherland Hussey Harris and Beijing's Pansolution won the international competition for a new building, which opened on 11 June 2016 on the west side of Tianfu Square.

The Puppetry Hall displays traditional Chinese shadow plays and their role in local entertainment and storytelling traditions. Visitors can see how this art form shaped performances and cultural expressions across different periods.

The museum stands on the west side of Tianfu Square; take exit W1 of Tianfu Square station on Metro lines 1 and 2, or buses 13, 30, 43, 47, 64 and 78 to Xiyuhe stop. Entry is free with a valid ID, and some temporary exhibitions require booking ahead. Last admission is one hour before closing, and the museum shuts all day on Mondays, New Year's Eve and the first day of the lunar new year.

The fifth floor holds the largest shadow-puppet and puppet museum in China, with a theatre seating 800 people. Visitors can operate puppets themselves, and the museum was the first in mainland China to promote itself through live streaming, with a single Weibo post reaching over ten million reads.
