Grey Goat Temple, Taoist temple in Chengdu, China

The Grey Goat Temple is a Taoist sanctuary in Chengdu with halls, courtyards, and pavilions displaying traditional Chinese architecture and ornate decorations. The various buildings spread across multiple levels, creating a connected complex with diverse rooms for worship and ceremonies.

The sanctuary was founded during the Tang Dynasty and underwent several reconstructions over the centuries. Most of the buildings visible today date from the Qing Dynasty, showing how the site evolved over time.

The temple serves as a place where followers gather regularly for Taoist ceremonies, and the Hall of Three Purities displays statues representing the highest deities in Taoist belief. These spaces show how Taoist spirituality is practiced today and what meaning these figures hold for visitors.

The temple is located near Qingyang Palace Station on subway line 5, offering easy access. Visitors should expect regular opening hours and wear appropriate clothing to show respect for the sacred site.

In Sanqing Hall stand two bronze goats, with one remarkably incorporating features from all twelve Chinese zodiac animals into its form. This intricate detail is easy to overlook but worth examining closely, as it shows how traditional symbols are woven together in the temple.
