Bundesstraße 27, Federal highway in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany
Bundesstraße 27 is a federal highway spanning 673 kilometers through multiple German states, running from Blankenburg am Harz in the north to the Swiss border in the south. The route passes through Saxony-Anhalt, Lower Saxony, Hesse, Baden-Württemberg, and Bavaria.
The road was established in the mid-20th century as an important north-south connection in Germany. South of Stuttgart, it follows the historic route of the Schweizer Straße, a significant trade route from the 1700s.
The road links medieval town centers with modern cities and rural areas across five federal states. As you travel, you experience the shift between historically-shaped communities and contemporary settlements.
Numerous rest areas, service stations, and connections to other major roads are available along the route. The journey is well marked, and there are plenty of opportunities to stop for breaks during the long drive.
The road has an interruption between Würzburg and Tauberbischofsheim, where traffic is redirected through the A3 and A81 motorways. This detour is a surprising feature along an otherwise continuous route.
