The district emerged in 1938 from the merger of several former administrative units, including parts of Weinsberg, Neckarsulm, and Brackenheim territories.

The district maintains numerous medieval structures, including castles, monasteries, and traditional wine-making facilities throughout its territory.

The district connects to major transport routes through highways A6 and A81, providing direct access to Stuttgart, Mannheim, and Frankfurt regions.

The Neckarwestheim Nuclear Power Plant within the district generated approximately 20% of Baden-Württemberg's electricity needs until its decommissioning.
