The Red Popsicle, Outdoor sculpture in Belltown, Seattle, US
The Red Popsicle is a 17-foot-tall outdoor sculpture located at Fourth and Blanchard featuring bright red coloring and a realistic frozen treat form. The artwork consists of steel and epoxy resin and occupies a prominent position at the southwest corner of the intersection.
Catherine Mayer created and installed this public artwork in June 2011, making it her first large-scale outdoor sculpture in downtown Seattle. The piece arrived during a period of growing public art investment in the Belltown neighborhood.
The sculpture takes a familiar childhood moment and transforms it into large-scale public art that people encounter while walking through the neighborhood. It brings a playful spirit into the everyday urban environment, inviting both locals and visitors to pause and smile.
The sculpture sits at street level on a corner where foot traffic is steady, making it easy to view from multiple angles throughout the day. The location is wheelchair-accessible and surrounded by shops and cafes where visitors can spend time nearby.
The steel and epoxy construction allows the structure to withstand weather and urban conditions while maintaining fine surface details that capture the melting quality of a real popsicle. This material choice made it possible to achieve a convincingly lifelike appearance while keeping installation manageable in a dense downtown setting.
