Cenote Ch ´oojaj

Cenote Ch'oojaj is a natural underground cave with crystal-clear freshwater and limestone formations. The cave passage extends deep beneath the surface and creates multiple water pools.

The limestone erosion that created this cenote began millions of years ago as rainwater gradually dissolved the bedrock of the Yucatan Peninsula. This long geological process shaped the cave structure visible today.

The name Ch'oojaj comes from the Maya language and refers to water continuously dripping through the limestone ceiling. This natural process shapes how the place looks and feels today.

The entrance is located along the Chemax road and is easy to reach by visitors. It is wise to bring sturdy shoes and a flashlight, as the cave areas inside are dark and uneven.

Inside, connected stalactites and stalagmites form natural columns resembling a labyrinthine network. These geological formations create an unexpected maze that few visitors fully explore.
