Papuma

Papuma is a sand beach on the southern coast of East Java with white sand bordered by steep limestone cliffs and scattered rock formations. The shoreline stretches across several kilometers with varied sections that include both open areas and more sheltered spots between the rocks.

The area around Papuma developed into a tobacco farming center during Dutch colonial times in the 19th century. This agricultural focus shaped the region's economy and infrastructure for generations afterward.

The name Papuma comes from the local phrase Padang Putih Malikan, which describes the white sand and shifting tides in the local language. This naming reflects how the community has long understood the character of this shore.

The beach offers camping facilities, restrooms, and parking areas across different sections. The best time to visit is during the dry season from May to September when weather conditions are more stable and the sea is calmer.

The beach divides into two distinct sections with different characters: one area is filled with numerous fishing boats while the other remains completely free of watercraft. This natural separation reveals how local fishermen organize their work and creates two very different environments along the same shoreline.
