Afton Canyon, Desert canyon in Mojave Desert, California, US
Afton Canyon is a desert gorge carved through reddish rock formations with sheer cliff walls that rise dramatically on both sides. The Mojave River runs through the canyon bottom, creating a ribbon of green vegetation that stands out against the surrounding desert.
Indigenous peoples relied on this water source for thousands of years as they traveled through the desert region. During the 1800s, it became a stopping point for American settlers moving westward, taking advantage of the reliable water supply.
The canyon walls contain numerous petroglyphs and archaeological sites that demonstrate the presence of indigenous communities throughout different time periods.
Walking trails of varying difficulty run through the canyon, allowing visitors to explore at their own pace. Bring plenty of water as the sun is strong and shade is limited in most areas.
This canyon represents one of only three locations where the Mojave River flows above ground throughout the entire year in the Mojave Desert.
