The Mojave Trails National Monument encompasses 1.6 million acres of federal lands between Barstow and Needles, containing mountain ranges, lava flows, and sand dunes.
President Barack Obama designated this national monument in 2016, following a significant land donation from The Wildlands Conservancy to the Department of Interior.
The monument preserves 105 miles of Route 66, ancient Native American trading paths, and military training grounds from World War II.
Visitors need high clearance 4x4 vehicles, one gallon of water per person daily, and should plan for limited cellular service in remote areas.
The Marble Mountains Fossil Beds within the monument contain trilobite remains dating back 550 million years, marking early life on Earth.
