Karlovy Vary Region, Administrative region in western Bohemia, Czech Republic
The Karlovy Vary Region is an administrative area in western Czechia that stretches across much of western Bohemia. It covers three districts and combines forested hills with river valleys and smaller settlements.
The region was officially created as an administrative unit in 2000 following reforms after the end of the communist system. Its spa towns and springs had however attracted travelers from many countries since medieval times.
Many place names in the area carry German roots and recall the Bohemian settlers who lived here centuries ago. Today these traces blend with Czech daily life in the streets and markets of the smaller towns.
Karlovy Vary airport offers international connections and sits in a convenient spot for travelers visiting the western part of the country. Buses and trains link the towns together and allow excursions into the surrounding countryside.
Some of the spring waters from this area are exported under brand names like Mattoni or Aquila to many countries and fill supermarket shelves there. These mineral waters carry the character of the rock layers beneath the region into distant cities.
