Monarch School, Montana, Therapeutic boarding school in Heron, Montana, United States
Monarch School was a boarding institution in Heron, Montana that combined academic education with therapeutic support for students. The sprawling campus offered dormitory housing, classrooms, performance and arts spaces, equestrian facilities, gardening areas, and spaces for outdoor recreation.
Patrick McKenna founded the school in 2000, first operating in Sandpoint before moving to a new location in Heron in 2001. Operations ended in 2017 when student enrollment dropped too low to sustain the program.
The educational program integrated academic studies with practical skills like cooking, forestry, gardening, and animal care without allowing personal electronics.
Keep in mind this is a former institution and no longer operating, so there are no regular visiting hours or student activities to see. Access to the property requires prior arrangement since it sits on private land.
The curriculum incorporated hands-on skills such as forestry, animal husbandry, and greenhouse work alongside standard academics. This blend of practical labor with classroom learning was a distinguishing feature that set it apart from typical schools.
