Tacna Department, Administrative region in southern Peru.
The Tacna Department extends from the Pacific Ocean to the Andes Mountains, featuring desert landscapes, volcanoes, and high-altitude valleys spanning 16,075 square kilometers.
Following the War of the Pacific, Chile administered Tacna from 1884 to 1929, when the Treaty of Lima returned the territory to Peru.
The local population maintains traditional festivals celebrating regional foods, including preparations of olives, maize, potatoes, and cotton from local agricultural production.
The department serves as a commercial gateway between Peru and Chile, with the capital city Tacna functioning as the primary administrative and economic center.
The region contains four distinct provinces - Candarave, Jorge Basadre, Tarata, and Tacna - each contributing to the department's mineral production and agricultural output.
