Yungay Province, Administrative province in Ancash Department, Peru
Yungay Province is a mountainous administrative area in the central Andes with eight districts spread across its territory. The landscape features steep ridges and high elevations typical of this section of the mountain range.
The territory was established as a province on October 28, 1904, becoming an independent administrative unit. Throughout the 1900s, new districts were added and boundaries adjusted to reflect changing population patterns.
Quechua speakers form the backbone of the community here, keeping indigenous traditions alive in daily life and local practices. The language and customs shape how people interact and celebrate their heritage.
The provincial capital connects all eight districts through a road network that is regularly used for travel. Buses operate between the district centers, making it possible to move between communities.
The province sits between two major mountain ranges – the Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Negra – that frame the landscape. The Waskaran peak rises at the southern edge, creating a dramatic natural landmark that defines the region's geography.
