Buddhas of Bamiyan, Giant carvings in Afghanistan
The Buddhas of Bamiyan were two towering statues chiseled into a cliff face.
Dating back to the 6th century, they reflected Afghanistan's Buddhist heritage.
The site was once a significant pilgrimage location for Buddhist monks.
Located in the Bamyan valley, west of Kabul.
Destroyed in 2001, they have since become symbols of cultural heritage loss.
