Paghman, human settlement in Afghanistan

Paghman is a town with roughly 120,000 residents near Kabul that feels much smaller due to its spread-out houses and quiet streets. It features gardens, tree-lined paths, and villas ranging from historic residences to newer homes, with a mix of traditional and modern architecture throughout.

Paghman served long as a retreat for wealthy residents from Kabul seeking green fields and cooler weather. Key Afghan figures including King Amanullah Khan and President Hafizullah Amin lived here, and the town was shaped by their presence.

Paghman maintains traditional dress and customs that differ noticeably from the Western influences found in nearby Kabul. Families gather in the gardens and by creeks for tea and leisure time, reflecting how daily life here revolves around local traditions and outdoor spaces.

The best time to explore is early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are milder and the garden paths are quieter. Most sites are reachable on foot, but sturdy shoes are wise since some ground surfaces are uneven.

At the far end of Paghman Gardens stands a large arch called the Arc of Triumph, built by King Amanullah Khan after a Paris visit. It remains one of the few surviving examples of European architectural style in the area and speaks to the cultural exchange of its era.
