Praia de Itaipu

Praia de Itaipu is a beach along the coast of Niterói with pebbly sand and calm waters good for swimming and fishing. The shoreline stretches in a gentle curve, backed by modest buildings and fishing structures that give the place its character.

The area was home to one of Niterói's oldest fishing colonies, dating back to the 18th century. This long maritime heritage shaped the settlement and continues to influence how the place functions today.

The name Itaipu comes from the Tupi language and means water flowing over stones, referring to how the landscape was shaped. This naming reveals a link to the indigenous peoples who lived in the region long before fishing settlements developed here.
