Icaraí is a neighborhood on the coast of Niterói with a beach facing Guanabara Bay. The area is shaped by a waterfront promenade where residential buildings and shops line the water's edge.
The neighborhood grew from the former parish of São João de Carahy and two major estates called Icaraí and Cavalão. These origins shaped how the area developed and looks today.
The name comes from the Tupinambá language and refers to a local fish species called acará. You can still see how the neighborhood maintains spaces where people gather and spend time in ways connected to this historical identity.
The neighborhood has schools, doctors, and shops within walking distance. Regular buses and other public transportation connect it to central Niterói and other parts of the city.
From the beach here you can see Christ the Redeemer statue and Sugarloaf Mountain across the bay. This view offers a different angle on Rio's famous landmarks from the Niterói side.
