Paço Municipal de Niterói, Eclectic architecture municipal building in central Niterói, Brazil.
The Municipal Palace of Niterói is a government building with eclectic architecture located at the intersection of Visconde do Uruguai and São Pedro streets. Its facade combines classical design elements from the early 20th century.
The building was completed in 1914 and replaced an earlier jail and chamber house that served as the municipal chamber until 1975. Its construction was part of a plan to renew the city center and remove structures from the Imperial period.
The building houses the Niterói Academy of Letters and the Historical and Geographic Institute, which preserve local collections and knowledge. These institutions make the place a center for the city's memory and heritage.
The building functions today as headquarters for the Municipal Education Department and Education Foundation of Niterói. Visitors should note that some areas may be accessible during business hours depending on administrative activities.
The building emerged from Mayor Feliciano Sodré's urban renewal plans, which aimed to remove Imperial period structures from the city center. These renovation projects fundamentally transformed the appearance of the city center at that time.
