Baía da Traição, municipality of Brazil
Baía da Traição is a small coastal town on the northern shore of Paraíba facing the Atlantic Ocean. The municipality features wide sandy beaches, calm river systems with clear water, mangrove wetlands, and coastal cliffs with coral reefs in nearby waters.
The town began in 1501 when Portuguese sailors encountered the local Potiguara people, leading to violent clashes that resulted in the deaths of some sailors. This event shaped both the place name and the early story of the settlement.
The name comes from a 1501 confrontation between Portuguese sailors and the Potiguara indigenous people. The Potiguara communities remain active today, keeping alive traditions such as the Toré dance and handcrafted goods that visitors can see and purchase in villages throughout the area.
As a small town, services are basic, with family-run guesthouses and simple lodging available throughout. Visitors should bring sunscreen, snacks, and other essentials, especially if planning to spend entire days outdoors exploring.
Rio do Gozo is a local river with crystal-clear and calm waters that holds sacred meaning for the Potiguara community who actively protect it. Visitors pay a small fee to access the site, where picnic areas and grilling facilities are available, along with opportunities to taste local fish stew.
