Chitungwiza, human settlement in Zimbabwe
Chitungwiza is a town in Mashonaland East Province, Zimbabwe, located southeast of Harare. It is made up mostly of residential areas, with schools, clinics, shops, and a central market that serves the daily needs of its population.
Chitungwiza grew rapidly after Zimbabwe's independence in 1980, expanding from a small settlement into one of the country's larger urban areas. Schools and health facilities built during those early years shaped much of the layout that visitors see today.
The name Chitungwiza means 'place of iron' in the local language, a detail that many visitors never learn. Local markets are lively gathering spots where people sell handmade goods, fresh produce, and everyday items side by side.
The town is easy to reach from Harare by road, and the main market is best visited in the morning when it is at its most active. Manyame Park offers open space and is accessible throughout the day.
Chitungwiza Central Hospital runs a maternity unit around the clock, which is relatively uncommon in the region. This has made it a reference point for patients coming from well beyond the town itself.
