Kawanda–Birembo High Voltage Power Line, Overhead power line in central Uganda.
The Kawanda-Birembo transmission line is a 220-kilovolt electrical infrastructure that runs across central Uganda, linking power generation and distribution points across the country. This overhead system carries high-voltage electricity over long distances, passing through multiple regions to supply power to communities and support regional electricity exchange.
The transmission line was developed as part of a regional effort to integrate electrical grids across East Africa and facilitate power trade between countries. This infrastructure represented an important step in connecting Uganda to broader regional energy networks.
The power line infrastructure development required cooperation between local communities, government agencies, and international partners to address land use considerations.
The line runs across open terrain and passes through various communities, making it visible from multiple vantage points along its route. The easiest way to see it is from major roads that cross its path.
The system is planned for an upgrade to 400 kilovolts, which will substantially increase its power transmission capacity. International development institutions are funding this modernization project.
