Ankole, Historical kingdom in southwestern Uganda
Ankole is a kingdom in southwestern Uganda that spreads across hills and valleys with Mbarara as its main urban center. The region features fertile lands used for both grazing and farming.
The kingdom emerged around 1500 and expanded through military campaigns and strategic territorial acquisitions into the large region it is today. These conquests formed the foundation of its current landscape and influence.
The Banyankole people have traditionally divided their society between herders and farmers, creating distinct ways of life that shaped the region over centuries.
You can reach Mbarara city by regular bus services from Kampala, with the journey taking about four hours on paved roads. The dry season is the best time to visit since roads are easiest to travel.
The Ankole-Watusi cattle native to this region are famous for their exceptionally long horns that developed naturally over generations. These animals hold cultural and economic value beyond their role as livestock.
