Lake Sarangan, Natural lake at Mount Lawu slopes, East Java, Indonesia.
Lake Sarangan is a natural mountain lake at the foot of Mount Lawu in East Java, stretching over several hectares of clear water. The shoreline is surrounded by pine forests and offers walking paths along with small wooden and stone houses scattered across gentle slopes.
Dutch settlers developed the area around the lake into a hill resort during the 1920s, building several villas and guesthouses. After Indonesian independence, the region became a popular weekend destination for families from Surabaya and Surakarta.
The name Sarangan comes from Javanese and refers to the cool mountain air of this area. Local families often visit the lake on weekends for picnics along the shore or rides in colorful pedal boats on the water.
The lake sits around 1300 meters above sea level and temperatures along the shore remain pleasantly cool throughout the day. The road from Magetan winds through several curves and climbs, passing different viewpoints along the way.
An annual ceremony called Ledug Suro takes place along the shore and uses traditional drums and gongs to welcome the Javanese new year. Fishermen sometimes pull small nets through shallow water near the northern coast in the early morning.
