Solo Balapan railway station, Railway station in Surakarta, Indonesia.
Solo Balapan is a railway terminal in Surakarta on the island of Java, built with a three-story roof structure and ten active platforms. The building displays Javanese architectural features from 1927 and serves as a hub for long-distance trains across the Indonesian island.
The Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij opened the terminal on February 10, 1870 during the reign of Mangkunegara IV. The original line connected Kedungjati and Gundih to Solo and later expanded the network eastward and westward.
The terminal takes its name from the word balapan, which means racecourse in Javanese and refers to horse racing grounds that once stood nearby. Today travelers pass through halls where traditional Javanese roof carvings frame modern departure boards.
Trains link the terminal to Jakarta in the west, Surabaya in the east, and several other cities across Java. A rail connection runs directly to Adisumarmo Airport, joining air travel with the railway network.
A pedestrian skybridge links the terminal directly to Tirtonadi Bus Terminal across the road. Travelers can switch between trains and buses without crossing the street or leaving the covered network.
