Pegunungan Bintang Regency

Pegunungan Bintang is an administrative regency in the eastern highlands of Papua, characterized by steep mountain ranges and high elevation terrain. The landscape is cut through by fast-flowing rivers descending from the Maoke Mountains.

The regency was formed in 2002 when eastern districts were separated from a neighboring administrative area to create a new region. This reorganization established a separate government unit in a remote mountainous area.

The region is home to several indigenous groups, each with their own languages and local traditions passed through families and communities. These peoples shape how villages function and what matters most to those living here today.

The region is difficult to access, with air travel being the primary way to reach and move between settlements. Visitors should expect limited infrastructure and challenging mountain terrain throughout.

The territory borders Papua New Guinea, making it a cross-border location with connections to neighboring regions. This geographic position has shaped local trade networks and cultural ties.
