Hawaiian Ocean View, Census-designated place in Kau District, Hawaii.
Hawaiian Ocean View is a scattered residential community on the southern slopes of Mauna Loa volcano on Hawaii's Big Island. The settlement spans several hundred square kilometers across different elevation zones, with multiple neighborhood areas spread throughout the region.
Development of the area began in the 1950s when an oil company divided the land into plots for residential sale. This initial planning set the foundation for the scattered community that exists today.
The community includes seven distinct subdivisions: Hawaiian Ocean View Estates, Hawaiian Ocean View Ranchos, Kahuku Country Gardens, Kula Kai View Estates, Kona Gardens, Keone's Ranchos, and Kona View Estates.
The area sits at varying elevations between roughly 1,600 and 5,000 feet, resulting in changeable weather conditions. Visitors should bring plenty of water and sun protection, as the landscape is open with minimal cloud cover.
The area sits near a volcanic rift zone where unusual vegetation patterns emerge that differ from other island regions. These distinctive growing conditions result from the dry, windy climate at this elevation.
