Mount Chiginagak

Mount Chiginagak is a stratovolcano in Lake and Peninsula Borough that rises to approximately 2134 meters and features fumaroles venting along its slopes. A crater lake sits at the summit, marking the volcanic caldera formed over many centuries.

Brief ash eruptions occurred here in 1971, followed by a more significant phase of volcanic activity in August 1998. These events demonstrate the volcano remains an active geothermal system requiring ongoing monitoring.

Native Alaskan communities monitor the volcanic activities of Mount Chiginagak as part of their environmental stewardship practices.

This volcano sits in a remote area accessible only with specialized mountaineering gear and experienced local guides. The challenging terrain and harsh weather conditions demand serious preparation and backcountry skills.

A crater lake formed between 2004 and 2005 from snowmelt and rainwater, eventually reaching about 400 meters across with highly acidic water. When this water drained away, it significantly altered local salmon migration patterns, revealing how volcanic activity directly affects wildlife below.
