Boney Peak, Mountain summit in Santa Monica Mountains, California
Boney Peak is a summit in the Santa Monica Mountains rising to 861 meters with distinctive sandstone formations that spread across the Pacific Coast Ranges. From the top, visitors can see views toward the Channel Islands and the Pacific Ocean.
The sandstone and rock formations of the peak formed roughly 15 million years ago and were later lifted to their current height by geological forces. These uplifting processes shaped the landscape that visitors see today.
The Chumash people held this peak as an important place, with an ancient settlement at its base where they lived for thousands of years. Walking through the area today, you can sense the deep connection these first inhabitants had to this landscape.
Access to the peak comes through a hiking trail in Circle X Ranch Park, where hikers should expect significant elevation gain as they climb. Starting early and bringing plenty of water is a good idea since the route is long and exposed to the sun.
The peak received snow in February 2019, a rare event in this typically dry region with a Mediterranean climate. This unexpected sight of white slopes serves as a reminder of how infrequent such weather happens at this location.
