The Original Farmers Market, farmers market in Los Angeles, California
The Original Farmers Market is a shopping and dining center located at the corner of Third Street and Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles, California. Around 100 stalls and shops fill the open grounds, offering fresh produce, meat, seafood, baked goods, sweets, and ready-to-eat food from many different cuisines.
The land was a dairy farm in the 1880s, then later used for oil extraction, before sitting vacant during the Great Depression in the 1930s. Farmers began selling fruit and vegetables from trucks parked on the empty lot, and the market grew slowly from that informal start.
The name goes back to a time when farmers sold directly to their neighbors, and that spirit still feels present in the open stalls and communal tables. People from all parts of Los Angeles come here to eat together outside, and the place feels more like a gathering spot than a shopping destination.
The market sits in a neighborhood where several other attractions are within walking distance or a short ride, including The Grove, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the La Brea Tar Pits. Combining a visit here with one or two of those spots makes for a full day without needing to go far.
Some vendors at the market have kept the same recipes and techniques for decades, such as Bennett's Ice Cream, which has used California ingredients since 1946. Just a few stalls away, Littlejohn's Candies still makes sweets by hand using the same methods as when it first opened more than 70 years ago.
