Camp Joe Scherman, Girl Scout camp in Mountain Center, California, US.
Camp Joe Scherman is a Girl Scout facility in Mountain Center spanning about 700 acres with two lakes, an Olympic-size pool, cabins, and many trails. The grounds sit at an elevation of about 5,500 feet (1,700 meters) and are positioned near the Pacific Crest Trail.
In 1959, an early state ranger named Joe Scherman helped acquire about 560 acres of land for the Girl Scouts. The grounds were expanded by an additional 140 acres in 1977, creating the facility that exists today.
The camp sits on land that once belonged to the Cahuilla people, and many spots throughout the grounds have names from their language. You can sense this connection to the region's original inhabitants as you move between different sections and areas.
To participate in summer camp programs or overnight stays, you need to contact the Girl Scouts of Orange County office in advance. The high elevation means the weather can be cool even during warmer months, so bring layers regardless of the season.
The upper section is divided into eight different units, each with its own setup and character. One area features rustic cabins while another mixes tent sites with permanent buildings, creating varied experiences across the grounds.
