Loreto, Colonial settlement in Baja California Sur, Mexico
Loreto is a coastal town on the California Gulf, spreading between high mountains and several nearby islands. The place has a compact historic center with colonial buildings and sits about 10 kilometers from a small international airport.
The town was founded in 1697 by a Jesuit priest and became the main Spanish colonial capital of the peninsula. It lost this administrative role in 1777 but remained culturally and religiously important.
The mission site shows the roots of Spanish colonial life and religious expansion in the region. Visitors can still see how this settlement became central to the mission movement that spread northward.
The airport is very close to town and makes travel from the United States or Canada straightforward. A car is helpful for exploring the bays and islands in the area.
Between February and March, large whales pass near the coast and can be watched from boats or shore. This is one of the most reliable times to see these creatures during their major migration.
