Turrialba Canton

Turrialba Canton is an administrative region in Cartago Province spanning about 1,600 square kilometers and comprising twelve districts. The territory includes the capital city of Turrialba and several smaller towns spread across varying elevations.

Human settlements in this region date back to around 9000 BC, documented through nearly 300 archaeological sites. These ancient traces show a long history of people living and working in the area.

Cheese production in the Santa Cruz district shapes local identity and daily life throughout the region. You can see this tradition reflected in the small shops and markets where locally made dairy products are sold.

The canton is well connected by national routes including Route 10, 225, and 230 that link the districts to each other and neighboring areas. Visitors exploring multiple towns should keep in mind that varying elevations may affect travel times between locations.

The canton is home to the only Major League baseball manufacturing facility in Costa Rica. This factory relocated from Haiti in the late 1980s and continues to produce baseballs for international leagues.
