Saltillo

Saltillo, Capital city of Coahuila State, Mexico

Saltillo is the capital of Coahuila state in northeastern Mexico, sitting in a valley at an elevation of 1,560 meters (5,118 feet). The city spreads between mountain ridges in the Chihuahuan Desert region and connects colonial neighborhoods with residential and industrial districts.

Alberto del Canto founded the settlement in 1577 as Villa de Santiago del Saltillo, making it one of the oldest colonial outposts in northern Mexico. The city grew into an important trading hub on the route between Mexico City and the northern territories.

The city is known for its colorful sarapes, striped wool blankets that artisans weave on wooden looms in small workshops. These blankets display bold colors and geometric patterns that you can see in markets and shops around the center.

The elevation brings mild days and cool nights, especially in winter, when you need a jacket in the evening. Most points of interest and markets sit in the historic center, which you can explore on foot.

The name comes from a small waterfall fed by a natural spring near the Parish of the Holy Christ. This waterfall is barely visible today, but it shaped the identity of the place since its founding.
