San Pedro Town

San Pedro is a coastal town stretching along the southern shore of Ambergris Caye with sandy streets and colorful buildings throughout. The main streets feature local markets, waterfront restaurants, and shops that form the core of daily life and commerce.

The settlement began in 1848 when four families arrived during the Maya uprisings and established their homes on the island. From this small start, the place grew into a recognized town and received official city status in 1984.

Locals known as San Pedranos speak English and Spanish, blending both languages into a distinctive local dialect. The streets reflect Caribbean trading heritage through colorful colonial-style buildings that line the waterfront and town center.

Getting around town relies mainly on golf carts and bicycles since streets are narrow and sandy. Water taxis and flights connect regularly to mainland Belize, making arrival and departure straightforward.

The town maintains two decompression chambers that serve divers exploring the nearby Belize Barrier Reef. The reef sits less than a kilometer offshore, making this town a key base for diving activities.
