Ambergris Caye, Marine island with barrier reef in Belize.
Ambergris Caye is a Caribbean island featuring white coral sand beaches and mangrove forests that cover much of its interior. The island stretches about 25 miles (40 km) along the sea and combines open shorelines with densely vegetated areas.
Maya communities first settled on the island and created the Boca Bacalar Chico channel to separate the land from Mexico's territory. This early work shaped the waterways that would later support settlement and trade routes.
San Pedro evolved from a fishing village into a thriving coastal town where locals and newcomers from around the world now coexist. The waterfront remains the heart of daily life, where fishing boats, restaurants, and shops blend with the rhythms of island living.
You can reach the island by airplane to San Pedro Airport from Belize City or by water taxi from the mainland. Plan your visit during the dry season from November to May for the most comfortable conditions.
The island runs parallel to the Belize Barrier Reef, offering unusual diving opportunities at several renowned dive sites just offshore. This rare proximity to famous reefs makes it a favored base for underwater exploration.
