Camp Bullis, Military base in Bexar County, Texas
Camp Bullis is a military training base northwest of San Antonio that spans roughly 28,000 acres and provides various facilities for soldiers. The grounds feature direct fire ranges, navigation and obstacle courses, plus specialized medical training centers.
The military acquired the land in 1906 as Leon Springs Military Reservation and renamed it in 1917 during World War I preparations. This change marked a shift to a new phase of military use and expansion.
The base carries the name of Brigadier General John L. Bullis and has shaped military training in the region for more than a century. Visitors can see how this long connection to military preparation is woven into the land and its facilities.
The grounds can be explored during certain training events and authorized visits, depending on ongoing military activities. Visitors should check ahead and confirm with gate personnel which areas are accessible.
The grounds hold archaeological sites dating back over 8,000 years, showing that people have occupied this area since ancient times. At the same time, it serves as a protected habitat for endangered bird species like the golden-cheeked warbler.
