La Cantera Resort & Spa, hotel in San Antonio, United States
La Cantera Resort & Spa is a hilltop hotel on the northwestern edge of San Antonio, Texas, with rooms and suites that open onto balconies facing the surrounding Hill Country. The property spans a large campus with multiple outdoor pools, a full-service spa, and several on-site restaurants.
The land where the resort now stands was once an active stone quarry that supplied building material to the region. During the 20th century the site was gradually developed and eventually transformed into a hotel and leisure complex.
The name La Cantera comes from the Spanish word for stone quarry, reflecting what this land was once used for. Visitors can notice this connection in the stonework and natural materials woven into the buildings and pathways throughout the property.
The resort sits roughly 18 miles (about 29 km) northwest of downtown San Antonio and is most easily reached by car. Because the region stays warm for much of the year, light clothing and sun protection are worth packing even outside summer.
The resort has a reputation as a popular spot for marriage proposals, and the staff regularly help guests plan and carry out these moments. The hilltop setting offers several outdoor viewpoints that face west, which makes them especially sought after at sunset.
